Lamaism in Tibet is divided into several schools.
One of the most distinctive and ancient is that of the rNin ma pa, or “the Ancients.”
Monks of this school wear different types of hats, each representing a specific spiritual and hierarchical role.
The RIG ZVA hat is worn by students who have passed the Sgrub Grva examination, which is reserved for the Grub Bla Ma and the abbots (Gdan sa).
